As a fourth generation musician, August has music in her blood. She started gigging at age thirteen, and hasn’t stopped since. As a child, she sat in on countless lessons, rehearsals and performances of classical, Jazz and pop music performed by her two piano playing parents, and her string playing grand parents and their many students. She spent hours lying on the floor wearing giant headphones listening to the family’s very eclectic vinyl collection. She was captivated by the sounds of the blues Divas she found there; Bessie Smith, Big Mama Thornton, and Billie Holliday.
Her band Barebones released their album For the Mind, Body & Soul, on Monster Music in nineteen ninety seven, which featured among others, members of Tower of Power. Billboard magazine called it a fun funky ride, fueled by Allison’s smooth, soulful vocals. On her new album Holy Water, August explores the blues in a new way, while still giving a nod to the traditional. She is joined by Coco Montoya, Paul Barerre,Greg Liesz, Lance Lopez and many others. Her live performance is highly energetic, and combines her love of blues, funk, rock and Americana , to create a genre all her own. www.allisonaugust.com
