LANCE CARSON & THE MALIBU ALL STARS

Most people who have already heard the name “Lance Carson” immediately associate that name with the sport of 60s style longboard surfing, longboard shaping and most noteably, his world famous surfboard logo. But even going back as far as the late 1950s, he had already been listening to his older sisters’doo-wop records. So having been influenced by the music of the day, he started singing lead in rhythm and blues bands at middle school events with some of his fellow students. By the early 1960s while at the height of

his surfing career, Lance was happy to find that some of the locals in the Malibu beach area where he frequented were young aspiring rock musicians. At many summer events, Lance was invited to sit it with the local players.
But he felt a bit uncomfortable as a front man and was encouraged to think about taking up the playing of an instrumenti in order to blend in. So he borrowed a set of drums and invested in his own microphone and stand
with an adjustable boom so he could get better at playing and singing at
the same time. Later, as these local musicians turned 21, they started focusing on thelocal night clubs. They were now becoming professionals.

Many people believe that if you surf, then surf music is your sound. Wrong! Even though Lance has had friendships over the years with Dick Dale of the Del-tones and Paul Johnson of the Surfaris, Lance never played or really enjoyed the twang of the surf guitar. He even did a commercial with Richard Delby and the Challengers for Jantzen Swimwear back in the early 60s. The band was also an opening act at the Surfers Stomp Revival headlined by the likes of Jan & Dean, a one-night event with a sold-out crowd of about 3,500 people at the famous Hollywood Paladium. Then in the mid 1980s, the band occasionally played on “rhythm and blues night” at the world famous Palomino Club in North Hollywood, California. And some of Lance’s best friends have been members of the Beach Boys’ back-up musician’s, namely Mike Kowalski, their drummer and Ed Carter, their back-up guitar player, along with Bruce Johnston, one of the Beach Boys’ main members.

Today, the driving beat off the Malibu All Stars rhythm and blues band comes from Lance’s roots in music. And their players have worked with some of the best…Jon Woodhead on guitar of the Leon Russell group… Ira Nepus on trombone of the Clayton-Hamilton jazz orchestra. And the members of the Malibu All Stars share this philosophy…we’re like a diesel locomotive powering down the tracks. They’re proud of our vocals…no sissy stuff…all power! Real goose bumps stuff. They’re just having fun and they’re not looking back!
